How effective do you think your parents raised you and how effective do you think your parenting is?

I'm doing a research paper on discipline so I just want to see if anybody has some honest answers for me that I might be able to use for my paper. And also were you emotionally, verbally, sexually, or physically abused as a child? How effective do you think your parents raised you and how effective do you think your parenting is?
I was spanked with a wooden spoon as a child as was my brother. My mother was frequently irrational and never explained to me why I was being disciplined. I had a happy childhood all things considered but I make sure that I explain to my daughter (even though she's only 2) WHY what she did was bad when she gets in trouble. I believe it's important for kids to know the why behind things or else they really don't listen. I also still hate the saying ';Because I said so!'; and I will never use it with my daughter. How effective do you think your parents raised you and how effective do you think your parenting is?
Yes to the emotionally, verbally and physically abused as a child ( by my father ). He successfully taught me how not to raise children and I haven't spoken to him (unless I ran into him somewhere on accident [rarely]) since I was 18.. that was 4 years ago.

My mother was always there for me, and albeit had some strange ways of running the show when she was around, and she can be a little dense sometimes, but I love her lots and we have a great relationship.
