For instance, when I was 15 I wanted to wear thongs so my panty line wouldn't show. Everyone at school would make fun of you if it showed. My parents wouldn't let me have thongs so I started not wearing any underwear to school. One day my skirt flew up and I had no underwear on and all the boys saw and the school called my mom about it. She took me to buy thongs that day. Now I am a mom and am curious about other parenting moves that could backfire. What parenting moves have backfired on you?
Just the other day, my 2.5 y/o son made a mess, like he always does, in the living room. I told him to clean it up. He said 'OK'. But he didn't. I told him again, this time adding, ';If you don't clean up your toys, they're going in the garbage!'; I gave him 5 minutes to start cleaning, but (of course) he didn't. So I gathered a few things %26amp; pretended to throw them away. I just dropped them behind the the garbage can. While it was open, he brings some toys %26amp; says,';Here mom. This is garbage'; %26amp; threw them in there. It was like he was calling my bluff. Silly guy. What parenting moves have backfired on you?
All of them!
lol.
Parenting is a battlefield, no one has any clue, just a good idea.
I have always taught my son to be secure in himself and his surroundings, and to not have fear of pain or hurting himself... now he's 22 months, fearless about throwing himself off furniture and tables (blood is cool mom!), and as independent as anything... not a total backfire, but its not the exact thing I was shooting for.
What counts is that we see the mistake and correct it. Like buying thongs once the necessity was discovered :)
What doesn't backfire! OMG I swear I have tried everything to get my 7 year old daughter to do stuff and nothing seems to work. What may work one day will not work the next. I have tried being nice, mean, strict, lenient, rewarding, you name it and I've been it. Like the guy above said, you just try your best because you don't really know what your going to get. I think a rational explanation of ';why'; helps better than a ';no because I said so'; approach. Good luck with motherhood!
well i remember my mom told me to wait til i was married to have sex and i ended up having sex at 16. luckily i didnt get pregnant or anything, til 24.
Just make sure anything you tell your children to do you are willing to do for yourselves. We tell my four year old she can't jump in the house and sure enough, when my fiance and I were playing around and wrestling, she came right out and reminded us that there were people downstairs. It took a lot of effort not to laugh as it was pretty cute. Also my mom told me and my sister when we turned eighteen and moved out, we could have any pet I wanted and now I live in a zoo.:) (not literally but we do have a cat and several caged reptiles) My sister moved out at 17 and bought a rottweiler then she and her puppy moved right back home and my mom has owned a new dog ever since.
