Children are very sensitive by nature, especially younger children. A harsh word in anger or upset can easily frighten a child into saying nothing at least for a while. sometimes they will tell truth when treated harshly or even beaten, but then all they learn is fear and mistrust. So this way of talking to a child is deeply flawed. A gentle, compassionate, but firm manner is the way to go. Children by nature are happy, light-hearted and optimistic. They don't understand unhappiness, failure or regret. God knows they will have a life time to discover it so why not give them optimism in their youth, hope and a feeling of empowerment.

When a difficult situation arises don't punish them by withholding your support and love but do the opposite. Tell them you understand totally and are there for them and give them a big hug. They will want to please you and make you proud and will grow up well-balanced and ready for the world's challenges.
