What kind of parenting produces free thinking open-minded children?

I'm wondering why I grew up under two authoritarian parents, yet never cared for traditions or gave any credence to authority for authority's sake. What kind of parenting produces free thinking open-minded children?
I'm in the same boat. I've always just chalked it all up to being rebellious. I'm now raising my own children to be open minded individuals by giving them different choices and letting them make up their own minds instead of forcing my own opinions on them. What kind of parenting produces free thinking open-minded children?
Proper discipline to teach them right from wrong is a must; however, different people have different opinions on what is right and wrong. I raise my children to follow the law, but when it comes to other decisions, I will let them learn on their own. There are certain moral values that aren't debatable such as generosity. As my children get older, I will educate them on the choices they have and the rewards and consequences of those choices. This goes for everything from cursing to religion. As long as you treat your child as a mature adult when they are impressionable, they'll make the right decisions.
Maybe it was BECAUSE they were authoritarians. I think that if you really try to be strict on kids, you'll get rebels, etc. etc. I also think it has to do with a kid's personality, whether they are laid back or wound up.
There is no way to be a perfect parent, but there are unlimited ways of being a good one.
Well I see it this way. You tell your kids don't do this don't do that, they are more inclined to do it. It's called rebellion, they live and learn and mold themselves from life experiences.

Granted some turn out better than others.
