Discipline or no discipline? Rules or no rules? What is the best parenting style for teenagers?
I was raised with rules (it sets boundaries and keeps them safe and out of trouble) and discipline (the ONLY way to enforce rules). Worked for me, now don't rule with an iron fist, but TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!What is the best parenting style for teenagers?
There must be rules and the rules must be enforced.
Rules and boundaries ~ they may not like them but they will appreciate having had them when they are older. I know I did.
TO BE PERFECTLY HONEST......CONSISTANCY......CONSISTANCY鈥?HOPE I AM SPELLING THAT RIGHT....BACK UP WHAT U SAY AND IF YOU SAY NO THEN MEAN NO..AFTER AWHILE THEY WILL GET INTO THE PATTERN U SET FOR THEM......IF U SAY NO BUT IN THE END U END UP SAYING YES..THEN THEY EXPECT THAT EVERYTIME.
I believe you should have set rules; but still be a little lineant. Teenage years are sometimes the hardest for many individuals %26amp; to have a parent constantly on your back is just more added stress! What you should do is think about how you felt when you were a teenager and think of ways your parents could have made it a little more easier for you. Teens that behave the worse are those that have to rebel %26amp; sneakly do things. Try to keep an open line of communication. Be cool %26amp; with the times. However, don't be a dumby %26amp; let them run over you; set boundaries %26amp; limits.
guidance without total control..allow choices..and..give love...they are children who need love..no matter how grown up they appear..they are children in adult bodies..learning about life and relationships.....and.don't you still love the praise and love of your parents as an adult now?....and....always respect....respect them..they are people who deserve all the respect.....as much as the queen of england or the president of the US............from a nurse to a children's pysch hospital in the US
You are the teacher. Teach them self-discipline. My kids and I had a great relationship. We talked about things that I needed as a Mom and things that they needed as teenagers. A couple of ideas that we had:
1. I had no curfews - they are dangerous during the driving stages of a kids life. We agreed on a time when they would be home and if they couldn't make it-they called. I helped them to understand that it was for my benefit - so that i didn't have to worry unnecessarily about them.
2. They always told me where they would be-again for my benefit in case there was an emergency. If they were going somewhere that they didn't want me to know about, I asked them to write it down on a piece of paper and put it in a sealed envelope in their dresser drawer and I told them I would only look if it was absolutely necessary (i.e. - an emergency, they were not home at the designated time and they didn't call).
3. I never looked in their rooms for stuff-I told them that I would never snoop. they had to clean out their pants pockets, put away their clothes and clean their rooms if they wanted to maintain a private life.
4. When they started driving, I told them that I would help pay for their first car it they bought a Volvo. If they wanted anything else they had to pay themselves. They both drove Volvo's -I was happy that they were safe.
5. I told them that I would put them on my car insurance so long as they had no moving violations. I showed them the cost of the insurance if they had to pay for it themselves,-they had no incidents for the first 'scary' 3 years. And from them on they drove safely.
6. We had a household with no 'girl' or 'boy' jobs. every task was every persons responsibility. If you like to eat-you need to learn how to cook, If you like clean clothes-you need to learn how to wash, etc. And the cook never did the kitchen clean up. My boys saw me chop wood, mow the lawn, take out trash and they saw their Dad cook, do dishes, do laundry, etc.
Luckily for me, my boys were open to this way of life. We all lived quite harmoniously. I taught them how to be humans.
They went off to college and I didn't worry about them taking care of themselves. I knew that they knew how.
Good Luck!!
